Live methodology

Today’s qualifying price ranges

This is the page’s live evidence panel. After every successful Fuel Finder update, each reported price is checked against the current UK median for the same fuel.

Petrol

Petrol: the current UK median is 173.9p per litre, so a reported price qualifies for comparisons between 138.9p and 233.9p per litre.

Diesel

Diesel: the current UK median is 199.9p per litre, so a reported price qualifies for comparisons between 164.9p and 259.9p per litre.

Super unleaded

Super unleaded: the current UK median is 192.9p per litre, so a reported price qualifies for comparisons between 157.9p and 252.9p per litre.

Premium diesel

Premium diesel: the current UK median is 219.9p per litre, so a reported price qualifies for comparisons between 184.9p and 279.9p per litre.

Unusually low

Absolute floor
80p
Below median
35p

A price is marked unusually low when it is below 80p per litre, or more than 35p below the current UK median for that fuel.

Unusually high

Absolute ceiling
300p
Above median
60p

A price is marked unusually high when it is above 300p per litre, or more than 60p above the current UK median for that fuel.

How the UK median is calculated

The median uses one latest reported price for each forecourt and fuel that falls within the absolute 80p to 300p range. Each forecourt contributes at most one price for a fuel.

From report to comparison

How a price becomes comparison ready

We never silently correct the source amount. We classify it, publish the outcome and control where the price can be used.

  1. Step 01

    Retain the report

We keep the source amount and reported time intact for each public forecourt and fuel.

  2. Step 02

    Check the range

The price is tested against the fixed outer limits and current UK median for that fuel.

  3. Step 03

    Publish the outcome

Qualifying prices power comparisons. Unusual prices stay visible with a clear warning.

Published outcomes

One status decides how the price is used

All three outcomes are transparent. Only a qualifying price can influence the comparisons drivers use to decide where to fill up.

Valid price

Within expected range

The reported price is eligible for averages, rankings and savings comparisons.

  • National, regional and town averages
  • Cheapest-price rankings
  • Station and market comparisons
  • Daily comparison averages

Comparison eligible

Unusually low

Below expected range

The source price remains visible, but cannot make a station or area look artificially cheap.

Visible, not compared

Unusually high

Above expected range

The source price remains visible, but cannot inflate averages or savings comparisons.

An honest boundary

What the checks can and cannot confirm

The range check protects PetrolDiesel comparisons. It is a quality safeguard, not independent proof of the price displayed at a forecourt.

Before you buy

A believable-looking price can still be late or incorrect. Check the price displayed at the forecourt before filling up, especially before making a special journey.

Official Fuel Finder guidance says price data can be delayed. Read the UK Government Fuel Finder guidance.

  • ComparisonsComparisons use qualifying pricesUnusual prices stay outside averages, rankings, market comparisons and per-tank savings calculations.
  • HistoryHistory keeps the classificationThe latest daily price is stored with its quality status. Unusual values remain visible, but outside that day’s averages.
  • FreshnessTimestamps show the price’s ageA current report remains in place until Fuel Finder supplies a replacement, so the reported time matters.

Savings methodology

How we calculate a per-tank difference

Across PetrolDiesel, we convert a pence-per-litre gap between comparison prices into an illustrative 55-litre tank amount.

The formula

price gap in pence × 55 ÷ 100

Worked example

Price gap

5p

Cheaper price vs benchmark

Tank size

55 litres

Fixed comparison size

Difference per tank

£2.75

5p × 55 ÷ 100 = £2.75

Illustrative example, not a live price claim.

We use the absolute gap between the two prices being compared, multiply it by 55 litres, then convert pence to pounds. This can compare the cheapest station with an area average, the cheapest with the most expensive, or one market group with another.

The wording follows the evidence. We call it a saving only when the selected option is genuinely cheaper. If it is dearer, we describe the extra cost. If the prices are effectively level, we do not show a saving.

A 55-litre tank is a consistent comparison size, not an estimate of what every driver buys.

Fuel-price accuracy FAQs

Understand unusual values, timestamps and rankings, then follow the right route if something looks wrong.

Does a valid price mean it is definitely correct?
No. Valid price means the report sits within the expected market range and can be used in comparisons. It does not independently confirm the forecourt display. Learn how we source fuel price data.
Do you change a price that looks wrong?
No. We preserve the amount reported through Fuel Finder. If it falls outside the expected market range, we label it as unusual and exclude it from comparisons.
Can an unusual price make a town look cheaper?
No. Unusually low and unusually high prices remain visible on the forecourt page, but they do not enter national, regional or town averages, cheapest-price rankings or savings comparisons.
Do older current prices expire automatically?
No. A retained current price remains current until the source replaces it. Its source timestamp stays visible so drivers can judge its age.
What should I do if a forecourt price looks wrong?
Check the source timestamp and unusual-price label first. If the displayed pump price still differs from the page, you can report a price issue with the forecourt and fuel details.
