What Petrol (E10) is, what drives the price and how to use the national average.
Petrol (E10) has been the UK standard petrol grade since 2021. It blends in up to 10 percent renewable ethanol to cut overall emissions and works in almost every petrol car built since 2011. Older or incompatible cars can use Super unleaded (E5) instead.
Petrol prices follow the wholesale oil market, the pound-to-dollar exchange rate, and fuel duty and VAT, which together make up around half of the pump price. The retailer’s margin is the part that varies locally, which is why town prices can sit several pence either side of the UK average.
Treat the national average as your benchmark, not a promise: the regional and town rankings above show where petrol is currently cheaper, and each town page lists individual forecourts so you can compare before you drive.

Petrol rose 1.7p/l, from 172.4p/l on 19 September to 174.1p/l on 20 October. The rise was not continuous: prices fell 0.7p/l from 5 October to 17 October before moving higher again. This is the national average, not a promise about every local pump, so it is still worth comparing nearby forecourts.
This chart follows the daily UK average petrol price in pence per litre, from 19 September 2026 to 20 October 2026. It shows the direction of the national market rather than the price at any single forecourt, so use it to judge timing and the rankings below to judge where.
Each point is a true daily average of prices published by UK forecourts under the government Fuel Finder scheme. Days appear only once their prices are confirmed, gaps are never filled with estimates, and every movement figure on this page is calculated from recorded prices.
