How we source fuel price data

PetrolDiesel uses the UK Government Fuel Finder service as its source for current fuel prices and forecourt details. We preserve the reported values, label their timestamps and only use qualifying prices in comparisons.

Official source route

From forecourt report to PetrolDiesel comparison

Fuel Finder is the government collection point. PetrolDiesel turns that source feed into pages designed to help drivers decide where to fill up.

  1. 01 Forecourt report

    Operators publish changes

UK motor fuel traders are required to submit a price update within 30 minutes of a change.

  2. 02 Government service

    Fuel Finder holds the feed

The service brings together current fuel prices, forecourt details and source timestamps.

  3. 03 Website publication

    PetrolDiesel refreshes its models

We preserve the source values, organise forecourts and rebuild the current comparison data.

  4. 04 Driver decision

    Qualifying prices power comparisons

Current prices that pass our published quality rules enter averages, rankings and savings calculations.

PetrolDiesel does not rewrite a reported price to make it look more plausible. The source amount remains visible, while our quality status decides whether it can influence a comparison.

What is in the feed

Source facts in, useful comparisons out

We keep a firm boundary between information supplied through Fuel Finder and the organisation, calculations and quality controls added by PetrolDiesel.

Supplied through Fuel Finder

The official record. We preserve every value exactly as it was reported.

Prices

Current retail prices by fuel type
The reported pump price for each available fuel at a forecourt.

Forecourt

Identity and operator details
Address, operator and brand information supplied through Fuel Finder.

Facilities

Opening hours and amenities
Source details that help explain what a forecourt offers beyond its fuel prices.

Freshness

Source update timestamps
The time attached to each price or forecourt detail in the government feed.

Added by PetrolDiesel

Our layer. Structure and explanation built on top, never written back into the source.

Useful place and route structure
We organise forecourts into canonical towns, regions and comparison pages without changing the source price.
Public quality outcomes
Reported prices are marked valid, unusually low or unusually high using our published rules.
Driver-friendly comparisons
Qualifying prices become averages, rankings, trends and potential per-tank savings.

Freshness without guesswork

Why two timestamps matter

A successful website refresh and an individual forecourt report answer different questions. These are the two labels you will meet on our pages, and what each one is telling you.

On the page as a whole

Prices checked20 Oct 2026, 06:02

The last successful refresh of our price models

It is one time for the whole page. It does not claim that every individual forecourt changed its price at that moment, and it is never used to describe a single reading.

Answers: how current is this page?

On one price

Reportedthat price’s own source time

The source time attached to that single report

Every price keeps the time it was reported through Fuel Finder. Two prices on the same page can carry very different ages, which is why we never stamp them all with the refresh time.

Answers: how old is this reading?

30 min

The reporting duty behind both labels. Motor fuel traders must submit a price change to Fuel Finder within 30 minutes of making it. That covers the submission to the government service, not the total time before the change reaches this website.

Live coverage

Coverage follows reported, usable data

Our totals change as the official source and website read models change. We publish live facts rather than storing a fixed coverage claim in page copy.

What coverage cannot promise

  • A forecourt can be absent

A newly opened, closed or not-yet-resolved site may not appear in the current public forecourt set.

  • A fuel can be missing

Not every forecourt reports every fuel type, and unavailable fuels are never filled with estimates.

  • A plausible price can still be wrong

Range checks catch unusual values, but they do not independently confirm the number displayed on the pump.

Fuel price sourcing FAQs

The practical details behind reporting duties, timestamps, missing coverage and the limits of source data.

Where do PetrolDiesel fuel prices come from?
They come from the UK Government Fuel Finder service. Motor fuel traders submit current prices and forecourt details, and PetrolDiesel uses that source feed to build comparisons. Read the official Fuel Finder access guidance.
How quickly must a forecourt report a price change?
Motor fuel traders are required to submit a price update to Fuel Finder within 30 minutes of a change. A delay can still occur before the change appears on a third-party comparison site.
Does “prices checked” mean every forecourt changed its price then?
No. “Prices checked” is the time PetrolDiesel last refreshed its current website price models successfully. Each individual price keeps its own source-reported timestamp.
Does PetrolDiesel independently confirm every pump price?
No. We preserve the source amount and apply transparent market-range checks, but a plausible price can still be late or incorrect. Read our data accuracy rules.
Why might a forecourt or fuel type be missing?
The public pages follow current source coverage and usable website identity. A forecourt can be new, closed, unresolved or absent from the latest listing, and not every forecourt reports every fuel type.
What should I do if a price looks wrong?
Check the individual price timestamp and quality label first. If the pump display still differs, you can report a price issue so it can be reviewed.

Official source, clear methodology

Fuel Finder data is made available by the UK Government. Public sector information is reused under the Open Government Licence v3.0. PetrolDiesel is an independent comparison website and is not the Fuel Finder service.
